Amy
came to stay at our homeless shelter during 2003. She had been struggling
with a serious crack and drug addiction and had actually resorted to
prostitution to support her habit. She had been surviving on the street for
approximately 6 years in this condition.
When
she arrived at our Serve City homeless shelter she was exhausted, sick, and
felt hopeless. After a few days, we began taking her to numerous places to
apply but it was difficult for her to find a job. Finally, one of our
church members had a contact and she was able to get a steady job that paid
enough for her to become independent. We were also able to assist her in
getting food stamps to supplement her income and the time arrived for her to
get her own apartment. We were able to entirely furnish her apartment,
provide necessary food for start up, and even give her a truck that someone
had donated to us so she had transportation to work!
Donations provided help in an apartment deposit, utilities deposit, and all
necessary expense. One of our churches started an Over the Hump fund that
gave rent assistance of decreasing amounts for the first few months.
This
young woman is now vibrant, self-confident, is now happily married and
living in her beautiful new home. We thank God for the miracles we have
seen in her life!

was a middle aged veteran who was found by the police passed out on the
railroad track, bruised and battered. He was well educated and very
talented but had been a victim of downsizing and then fell into
alcoholism. His blood pressure was stroke level and induced a mini stroke
during his first few days staying the Serve City homeless shelter.
We
were able to connect with the VA Services and he found he had been a large
pension. This man now lives in an immaculate home that was completely
furnished by Serve City and receives supplemental food when necessary. He
now returns to Serve City nearly every day to help out in any way he can.
He feels we give him hope and a positive reason to stay sober.
